Livingstone, Zambia. 07^th January 2026 – The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) will hold an Extraordinary Meeting of the Committee of Ministers of Defence on 10 January 2026 in Livingstone, Republic of Zambia, to deliberate on the deteriorating humanitarian and security situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and its wider regional implications. The Extraordinary Meeting seeks to forge a unified and coordinated regional response, in line with the ICGLR Pact on Security, Stability and Development and the Protocol on Non-Aggression and Mutual Defence. Bujumbura, Burundi, 9th December 2025 – The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) expresses its condemnation of the tragic incident of 4th December 2025 in Kalogi town, Republic of the Sudan involving the rebel militia of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This devastating massacre, which targeted innocent civilians, including young children in a kindergarten and patients in a hospital, represents a profound violation of human rights and international humanitarian law. The heartbreaking loss of 79 lives, among them 43 children and 6 women, stands as a stark reminder of the senseless violence that impacts vulnerable communities. The International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) today held the official handover ceremony for the Office of the Executive Secretary, with His Excellency Ambassador João Samuel Caholo formally transferring office to His Excellency Dr. Mubita Luwabelwa. The handover takes place shortly after Heads of State renewed their commitments to peace, security, governance, and regional integration, and reflects the strong support of the DRC as current Chair of the Organization.
